Piracy

The International Group Annual Review 2011/12 includes the following article on piracy.

Skuld has published an International Group Circular which includes links to the BIMCO GUARDCON Contract, Explanatory Notes and Guidance on Rules for the Use of Force.

On 2 June 2009 the International Group published FAQs designed to provide general clarification and guidance on a number of issues which had been raised concerning insurance cover arising out of piracy incidents and the engagement of security personnel.

A revised version was published in September 2011.

The latest FAQs can be found here.

The main changes are in respect of the following Questions:

  • Q 2: “Similar weapons of war”,

  • Q 6: Should shipwoners carry guards,

  • Q 7: Should guards be armed?

  • Q 9: Are there any contractual/insurance issues with the use of security companies?

  • Q 10: Where can shipowners find guidance to avoid being attacked?

  • Q 14: Are ransom payments covered by the clubs?

The International Group website has a section on the subject of piracy.
