Ukraine: Pilotage in Kerch Straits

Port news

Published: 28 April 2014

We have been advised that at present, pilotage, for ships proceeding to Ukrainian ports of Mariupol and Berdyansk along the Kerch Strait, is carried out in accordance with the previously existing procedures.

That means the shipowner arranges with the local shipping agents, in the intended Ukrainian port, for a pilot in the usual manner. The agent will then engage the pilot in Kerch as has been the previous practice.

It is likely, however, that this practice may be subject to change once the acting authorities in the Crimean region and Russia attend to these matters.

It is therefore recommended that shipowners whose vessels are ordered to call at Mariupol or Berdyansk ports check with the local shipping agents in advance, and repeatedly, prior to arrival in the area as the situation may change at short notice and without advance warning.

In the meantime, the Association would repeat its caution about shore leave and venturing beyond port limits in any port in the Crimean region or eastern Ukraine while the present developing situation continues.

For further queries, members are asked to contact the Association.

The Association is grateful to Messrs. Dias, correspondents, for continuing to provide updates on the developing situation in and around Ukraine.
